湯(とう)先生(せんせい)
清華(せいか)大学(だいがく)の大学院(だいがくいん)でご指導(しどう)いただいた谷口(たにぐち)龍子(りゅうこ)です。
先生(せんせい)とはいつも日本語で話(はな)していたので、日本語で書(か)かせていただきます。
先生に初(はじ)めてお会いした日のことは昨日(きのう)のことのように覚(おぼ)えています。先生は、人社院の教室でおおぜいの大学院生に対して講義をなさっていましたね。私は知り合いに誘(さそ)われ、何もわからないまま授業を見学(けんがく)したのですが、あの日(ひ)以来(いらい)、言語学にのめりこみ、ほぼ３０年の月日が経(た)ちました。
先生のおかげで現在(げんざい)大学の教員として研究(けんきゅう)に励み、学生の指導(しどう)に追(お)われています。
先生がいつもおっしゃっていた「推理、推論」ということばは今でも私の耳に焼(や)き付(つ)いています。ことばのメカニズムを解明(かいめい)することの喜(よろこ)びや楽(たの)しさを教(おし)えてくださったのは湯先生です。感謝(かんしゃ)してもしきれない思いでいっぱいです。

Dear, Tang-sensei

I'm Ryuko Taniguchi, who was instructed at the graduate school of Tsing Hua University.
I always talked to you in Japanese, so I will write in Japanese.
I remember the day when I first met you, as if it was yesterday. The teacher gave a lecture to a large number of graduate students in the classroom of the 人社院. I was invited by my friend to observe the class without knowing anything, but since that day, I have been absorbed in linguistics, and almost 30 years have passed.

Thanks to you, I am currently studying as a faculty member at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and teaching linguistics to students.
The word "推理, 推論"　that the teacher always said is still strongly remembered in my memory. It was Tang-sensei who taught me the joy and fun of analyzing the structure of words. I am sincerely grateful.
